Islamic New Year Holiday announced.... sort of.

Well the holidays have been announced for the Islamic New Year next week, but there's a catch. The holiday will be one day off, but the day to be taken off is not yet set, because it will fall on the First of Muhharam (aka the first day of the new year)  - and this day is not yet known for sure - another job for the moon spotting committee I guess.

The holiday will most likely fall next Sunday (2nd October) but there's a chance it might be on Monday (3rd October). The moon sighting committee are getting their moon-gaze on this coming Saturday.... so we won't know if we have to go to work on Sunday for sure until Saturday night....

I'll take a day off though!

  1. Actually, there's more than just a chance that the holiday for 1st Muharram 1438 AH may be on Monday rather than on Sunday. On Saturday, the crescent moon will be visible to the naked eye only in Central America. In parts of the world further west - Europe, Africa, and Arabia just up to Oman - the moon can be seen only with "optical aids" - i.e. through a telescope.

Oman's Moon-sighting Committee has, in the past, accepted only naked-eye sightings of the moon. Any such reported sightings this Saturday will be mistakes. It is of course open to the Committee to consider such a sighting as not a mistake, and/or to accept a telescopic sighting instead; we'll have to wait and see.

If the traditionalists on the Committee continue to have the last word, the holiday here will be on Monday. Cheers, = The Desert Leopard
