September 11th - where were you?

Well, it is September 11th again. A date that is one I'll never forget for as long as I live. Everything changed as a result of this day. And this is the first anniversary of the atrocities committed that the nut case Osama Bin Laden will not be alive for.

For me, I was going to work in Edmonton, Alberta. I remember getting to work and wondering where everyone was, and then getting a call and then checking the internet and watching a stream as a plane flew into one of  the towers. Such a waste of life, there is not a lot else to be said. Spare a thought today for all of those people that have lost their lives as a result of terrorism everywhere in the world.

  1. I was in Ethiopia on an assignment. It was actually the equivalent of New Year’s Day there and therefore I was quite hangover. I remember waking up and turning TV on to CNN as i used to everyday. Still in bed, the first images I saw was a little smoke in such huge tower and at that’s stage not even the commentators knew it was an airliner. The rest is history...PEACE.

  2. I am from the UK and I was on holiday with my son in Greenville, South Carolina. We had had no TV for a couple of days and were in the complex reception to check out why. Saw it all on a huge TV screen and thought it was a film! until several other people who were there started screaming and crying, then I realised it was actually happening! What a waste of human life and for what? I hope Bin Laden is actually dead and that they got the real one that is assuming he was the one behind it all but you never know with the US.

  3. It was late afternoon in Salalah. I was studying for my grade 11 Arabic exam and my father called screaming "Turn on the TV!!!". The streets were deserted. We sat there and watched, horrified, as the second plane appeared and both towers collapsed.

So pissed off i ended the conversation...

  7. I was living in Dubai and all I heard on the radio was that 2 planes had flown into the World Trade Centre. I though they were talking about the WTC in Dubai but as I was driving towards it I could clearly see it was not. When I got back to the office we all sat round the radio listening as events unfolded.

  8. Was at home preparing to go for a radio interview on Oman FM with the late Abeer Tannir (RIP) about a website we were about to launch. My cousin, who was my partner in the website project, called and said to turn on CNN. It had just happened. It was still speculation that it was plane that had hit the first tower. Went to the radio studio and while we were there the second plane hit the second tower. By then every single TV channel, even Oman TV was carrying the CNN feed.

  9. Saudi Arabia...packing to leave for good the next day. Same as Muscati I got a phone call and turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane hit. Utterly surreal...and ten years of madness since...

  10. I was leaving college and getting into a friend's car when her mum said "oh my god" and froze. We asked what was wrong and she turned the radio up where we heard the DJ saying that the World Trade Centre had been hit by a plane. I rushed home and turned on the TV only to watch the towers tumble. What I remember most is my mum coming home and all of us sitting in front of the TV. She turned to me and said, "You do know everything is going to change now..." and I guess she was right. I have to ask - am I the only one who when they see the photos and videos of what happened, still struggle to really grasp it?

  11. Working my 18th consecutive double shift at the Adam's mark hotel in Colorado. on September 10th, We were calling it Super Tuesday, we had a full house, and something like 80+ events on the books. I remember listening to the AM radio all day in the kitchen, and the housefull of pain-in-the-ass Doctors we couldn't get rid of. I think we did like 220 covers that night, even as the world seemed to be crumbling, and walking out at 1:00 through a silent lobby with Anthony, pausing to look at the CNN replays on the Hotel TV's. They were the first images from the day that either of us really saw. It was surreal, to say the least.
