So I was playing around with Blogger the other day and decided to run a poll. I thought to myself I'll be lucky if 50 people vote in 2 weeks, having had low responses to polls in the past on other websites.
I was wondering what Oman-based English newspapers you all read and so decided to ask. I have been amazed that there was 206 votes - thank you to everyone that has voted.
The results show a clear winner - Muscat Daily, taking a massive 65% of the vote (135 votes)
The online news outlets took 2nd place, with 15% of the vote (31 votes)
Times of Oman came next with 10% (21 votes)
Then the Observer, with 4% (10 votes)
And also 4% of you (9 votes) did not read any of the news papers or online outlets!
I will be announcing the winner of the draw for the free tickets to the Who's line is it anyway? comedy night (at 8pm on Thursday evening at the Crowne Plaza) on Wednesday morning - so make sure to enter the competition if you fancy winning 2 tickets.

I know what you mean by the uncertainty of how those polls can work out. Congrats on the successful poll results, Sythe! That's an accomplishment in itself. Muscat Daily kicks butt! (Needless to say, I was one of those 135 votes! :-)

Interesting. I remember going to the launch of "The Week" in about 2002/3 and wondering whether a freely distributed newspaper would ever become big enough to make money in this city. It was a huge success, and Muscat Daily the logical successor. I've got to hand it to APEX for having the courage to go for it. It's really paid off.
ReplyDeleteThe reason must be that these papers are the closest to being proper newspapers, with the occasional actual piece of local news, written by a reporter, who went to find out what was happening! The standard is extremely low, and it's about time someone cared enough to raise it a little. Good for you, Muscat Daily!
One thing that surprises me a little about this poll is how far behind "Times of Oman" is. It seems to be the first choice of the Indian community who make by far the biggest proportion of Oman's English language newspaper readers. I guess this blog hits a different demographic. Oman Observer dropping off the charts is no surprise. Maybe it is odd that the online readership isn't higher, but as the online versions of most of them are basically just RSS feeds, I guess most of us have arrangements for that through our own chosen medium anyway.
I've been pondering for about a week on writing something about how awful the information media are around here...but maybe I will wait to see what depths are plumbed by Dirge FM when they get to their actual launch...wouldn't want to miss such a sitter ;)
Linoleum dude... you've been 'pondering for about a week'... good for you. Can't wait to see the thrilling insights you have on the crappy media scene. It might need more than a week of your time to tackle it though.

ReplyDeleteI note that Blogostan now has media sponsorship emerging too. Fair enough, we all have to make a living. But having already abused the sponsor's name on this very blog, maybe I should button my lip, at least here!
Anyway, can't wait for 7am tomorrow...really. It's like the build up to North Korea vs Brazil. You kind of know how it's going to turn out, and yet are torn between wanting the unlikely to happen and not wanting to be wrong...
