Happy Canada Day



It's July 1st, which means, it's Canada day. It's Canada's 146th birthday today, it's getting up there.

Here's 15 interesting facts about Canada you may not have known.....

1. Canada is a huge country.
It is:

• comprised of six time zones.
• almost 30% larger than Australia.
• more than 3 times the size of India.
• more than 18 times the size of France.
• almost 20 times the size of Spain.
• almost 28 times the size of Germany.
• more than 33 times the size of Italy.
• almost 37 times the size of New Zealand.
• almost 41 times the size of the UK.
• more than 142 times the size of Ireland.
• it's bigger than the USA.

2. The Longest Street in the World
The longest street in the world belongs to Yonge Street in the Province of Ontario. Yonge Street starts at Lake Ontario, and runs north through central and northern Ontario to the Ontario – Minnesota border, a distance of over 1178 miles / 1896 kilometres. The Guinness Book of World Records recognized this claim as late as 1998.

3. The Longest Highway in the World
The Trans-Canada Highway between Victoria, BC and St. John’s, NF is the world’s longest national highway with a length of 7,821 km / 4,860 miles.

4. The Longest Coastline
Canada has the world’s longest coastline: 202,080 km / 125,566 miles.

5. North America’s Smallest Railway
The Thousand Island Railway, which ran in Gananoque Ontario, is North America ’s shortest railway in history, just 5.43 km / 3.32 miles.

6. Longest Tunnel on the Continent
CP Rail’s 9 mile / 14.5 km long Mount Macdonald Tunnel, in the Rogers Pass area of British Columbia, is the longest tunnel on the continent.

7. The World’s Longest Freshwater Beach
Wasaga Beach on Georgian Bay is the world’s longest beach, 8.6 miles / 14 km. Wasaga Beach is located about 2 hours northwest of Toronto, Ontario.

8. Oldest National Park
Banff National Park, located in the Province of Alberta, is the oldest national park in Canada, established in 1885.

9. Largest Sony Big Screen
Inside Toronto’s Rogers Centre (formerly known as the SkyDome) you will find the largest Sony big screen, measuring 33 ft. x 110 ft. (10.0 m x 33.6 m).

10. Blackberry Smartphone
The world famous Blackberry Smartphone was developed at Research In Motion’s Waterloo Ontario facilities.

11. Macaroni and Cheese
Canadians consume more macaroni and cheese than any other nation on earth.

12. No mail on Saturday
There haven`t been mail deliveries on Saturday in Canada for the past 35 years.

13. Inventor of Basketball
Canadian James Naismith invented basketball to give his physical education students at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, an indoor team sport to play during the long winters.

14. Canada’ weirdest club
If you visit Dawson City, Yukon, you can join the “Sourtoe Cocktail Club” — all you have to do is finish a drink (of anything!) with a real human toe in the bottom. The club’s motto says, “You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow — but the lips have gotta touch the toe.”

15. Canada’s temperatures
In 1962, Pincher Creek, Alberta experienced the fastest, biggest temperature change ever recorded in Canada as a result of a Chinook (a warm, dry wind that comes off the Rocky Mountains). The temperature rose from -19C to 22C in just one hour!

  4. Famous Canadians prove you have to leave Canada to work. Keanu Reeves. KD Lang. William Shatner. Martin Short. Mathew Perry (from Friends). Michael J. Fox. Brendan Fraser (from THE MUMMY). Director James Cameron. Writer/Director Paul Haggis. Diana Krall (jazz). Alanis Morissette.Shania Twain.Le Cirque du Soleil creator. and so forth...sure it's a BIG country. But it's a big farm ran by farmers who keep the money and jobs within their own families..like the mafia. It is a stifled economy and we don't need more donut shops thanks. Nor do we need more unskilled labour. Canada the country that was.

  6. You guys may have been smart enough to invent basketball, but it was 15 years before it occurred to anyone to make a hole in the net so the ball would fall through. Up until then they pushed it out with a stick!!
