If you're like me, there are really only 4 schools in Muscat worth considering for your kids, and then you have to make the decision about where to send your kids for their education once they get a bit older, and the rumours around town here are rife: All the schools are great until your kids turn 11, then it's a bit of a crap shoot.
A cheap throwaway comment, but there's no smoke without fire I guess. Or maybe there is, I don't know!
There is always the option of sending your kids to a boarding school, and for those of you that might be considering this, there will be some representatives from Anderson Education available to answer any questions you may have later this month. The Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of January at the Crowne Plaza in Qurum they'll be more than happy to help you consider a boarding school or maybe just a summer programme for your kids.
Boarding schools aren't for everyone, but for those of you considering them, you might want to pop down and have a chat with the Anderson Education people later this month.

I went to a boarding school and loved every minute of it. I agree it is not for everyone, but it is what you make of it.

ReplyDelete'Good' is comparative. The schools here that are 'good' just have to be better than the state schools (including Choueifat which is a whole other topic!).

- ABA (American British Academy)
- BSM (British School Muscat)
- TAISM (The American International School Muscat)
Not sure which is Sythe's 4th choice........
South African boarding schools are also very good and also less than sending kids to school here.
I know this is not about boarding schools but it is about kids, sorry to be off topic. I am trying to decide whether to send my son 16 years old on a school trip to Muscat. Given the trouble in Yemen and Saudi Arabia do you think the security situation in Oman has been affected? He will be staying in Muscat and hiking in areas nearby. They might go snorkelling to also close to Muscat. What about the road traffic situation which the australian government warned about and more importantly is security at the airport good? Its mostly terrorism that I am concerned about. Any input please? Thank you in advance I prefer to listen to people on the ground rather than ambiguous government websites. Thanks in advance

Yes there is heightened security because of the Yemen situation, that is normal. There is probably heightened security there in Australia because of similar threats.
The airport security is good, there are two levels of screening you have to pass through (one set of metal detection and bag scanning before you check in, and then another set after you have checked in).
People drive a bit erratically here, but it's a lot better than it was. There's always the chance of having a traffic accident, anywhere in the world, and I'd guess that chance might be a little bit higher here, but I wouldn't let it stop my teenage son having a great trip.
Now, don't you have to throw another shrimp on the barbie?

My 4th choice is the Royal Flight School... which is not that simple to get into.
