Oman Sails new contest: Sail with Colours

Oman Sail has recently launched it's latest initiative to get children involved with sailing: Sail with Colours.

To celebrate the Omani Year of Children 2012, Oman Sail is launching an online contest for children, to design a sail for a small dinghy sail boat RS Q'BA.

This contest is the first response to the announcement of Year of Children 2012 in the Sultanate. There is an important story to tell to all children living in the Sultanate about Oman's maritime and seafaring heritage - the contest is a fun way to encourage children’s artistic talents whilst helping to raise awareness of the emerging sailing culture among the youth in Oman. The contest targets children aged between 6 and 16 years and can be entered via Oman Sail’s Facebook page.

The ‘Sail with Colours’ competition is to find the best design for a sail of an RS Q’BA boat. Entries are from school children falling into two categories: the first category is for children aged from 6 to 11 years and the second for those aged between 12 and 16 years. Both Omani and expatriate children can participate in the contest.

1. First prize is a RS Q'BA boat! (Pictured below)
2. Second prize is a weekend stay and sailing courses at the Shangri-La Resort and Spa and a certificate.
3. Third prize is a super surprise!

Participants can submit their designs by uploading their artwork to http://facebook.com/OmanSail, or e-mailing their work to kids@omansail.com. Alternatively the contestants can deliver their artwork by hand to the reception at Oman Sail headquarters located at The Wave, Muscat. The Oman Sail judging committee will select the top 30 designs. From these 30 shortlisted designs, the top 10 will be selected by a jury team which includes high profile officials. Finally, the top 3, and the overall winning entry will be selected via public voting on Facebook.

Hameed al Balushi, the popular sports TV presenter will be the spokesperson for the sail design contest.

Oman Sail has a huge focus on the youth of Oman, and teaching young Omanis to sail is the primary objective of the company. Its Try Sailing program will teach over 30,000 young Omanis to sail by 2015. These innovative training programmes are inspiring a new generation to discover and enjoy sailing. The first graduates of Oman Sail's training programme have already achieved many victories as part of their elite inshore and offshore racing teams.

Here are a few notes about the competition:

1.The contest will be officially launched on Facebook (http://facebook.com/OmanSail) with full details on November 1, 2011.
2.The last date for submission of entries is December 16. The public voting feature will be open on Facebook from 27 to 31 of December 2011. The top 3 winners in each category will be announced on 1 January 2012.
3.Online will be the main channels of communication for the contest.
4.Facebook will be the online platform for competition information and submission of sail designs.
5.The Facebook page tab will be specifically designed for the contest and include a video about the contest (in Arabic), terms and conditions of the contest, a form through which contestants can easily fill and upload their submissions, and a downloadable template for the sail to be painted on.

Basically, you download this .pdf file and colour in the sail... heres a sample...

Tomorrow / Bokra

On Friday the 11th (Rememberance day) a charity music single was released globally via CNN and MBC. The track is called Tomorrow / Bokra and is a re-release of Quincy Jone's original track, Tomorrow (a better you, better me).

The reason for blogging it is the local spin, local Omani artist, Salah Al Zadjali features in the track along with 23 other "leading Arab music artists from 16 nations across the Middle East and North Africa".

Anyway, here's the track for you to have a listen to. It's fairly long!

Have a nice day!

Book review: Storm Front

I dont think I've written a book review since I was 10 and had to write a review about James and the Giant Peach, but this time I wanted to share with you all the latest book that I've just finished reading:

I won't go into detail about the book, but it's very well researched, and well written and very informative. Very enlightening the way that the Accession to the throne of His Majesty is described in the opening chapters of the book. And as for the battle at the end in Mirbat, I could not put the book down it was so interesting to me.

Click this Amazon link for more details (don't worry it's not a referral thing!).

Well worth the tenner it currently costs.

The blurb says:

In early 1970, the Commanding Officer of 22 SAS flew into the strategically critical Sultanate of Oman on a covert intelligence mission. A Communist rebellion in the south threatened not only the stability of the Arabian Peninsula but more importantly the vital oil routes through the Persian Gulf.

Within six months, the Regiment arrived in theatre to lead a fierce, secret war against the rebels.

From a remote RAF airbase in the desert, an elite band of British pilots, flying difficult, dangerous missions in Strikemaster jets and Vietnam-era Huey helicopters, were scrambled alongside them.

For the British soldiers and airmen, it was to be no easy victory. The enemy were well supplied with weaponry and training from China and the Soviet Union, and despite confronting the largest assault force ever deployed by the SAS, many months later the rebels were still fighting back.

At dawn on 19 July, 1972, a force of nearly 300 heavily armed, well-trained guerillas attacked the little fishing port of Mirbat without warning. Between them and glory stood a team of just nine SAS men, and the skill of the British fighter pilots. The scene was set for an epic encounter; a modern-day Rorke's Drift. Their heroism would become SAS legend.

Drawing on extensive interviews with participants from the SAS, the RAF and the Sultan's Armed Forces, most of whom have never spoken about their involvement before, as well as previously classified documents from both the UK and Oman, Storm Front weaves an unputdownable tale of intrigue, action, daring and astonishing bravery in the face of overwhelming odds.

I highly recomend reading it.

A few updates...

Firstly...

I hope you are all having a great Eid vacation, personally I am having a great time!

Image from Joint Typhoon Warning Center
It seems that there is more rain heading towards the capital with showers expected by most weather predictors to begin tomorrow and run through until Friday at the latest - patchy showers, not continuous.

Last night was the Shaggy party, with the VIP after party at Zouk later on - I've not heard much about it yet but what I have heard was positive, great to see more acts coming to town :)

This Wednesday the 9th sees Jay Sean and Shontelle at the InterCon gardens, gates opening at 7. I'll announce the winner of the 2 free VIP tickets to The Script tomorrow. I'm told that there are a few tickets remainig for both the gigs, not many though! You can buy them at the following outlets: OUA MQ, Bose Qurum City Centre & Al Ghazal pub at the InterCon.

For people that like rock music, I woke up this morning and was surprised to see the following poster:

This Friday, at the Safari Bar in the Hyatt, RO 10 on the door, doors open at 7, band on at 9. Should be fun, even though it's on a school night for many of us.

I also saw that Craic Attack is coming back -

Tickets are OMR12, available at Crowne Plaza and OUA retail outlet in MQ. Doors open at 8pm (show 9pm).

Tomorrow I'll announce the winners to the Script concert... you can still enter... click here for details.

The Oman Cat-Astrophe lot have a petition going on to gauge support for an animal shelter campgain they want to launch. You can help by signing the petition on facebook, here. I suggest that your contact information can be found by clicking your name, and that you don't need to put your email address there publically for all to see.

Local blogger, Happily Married to a Biker has started a new blog to support her moms new store, Unique Star Fashion at the Zakher Mall in Al Khuwair. It's great to see more shopping choices with web-presence here in Muscat!
